Website accessibility basics for inclusive digital experiences
Improve website accessibility with clear structure, text alternatives, keyboard access, contrast, readable copy, focus states, and accessible forms.
Start with the real job
Accessibility is the practice of making digital information and tasks usable by more people in more contexts. It improves the experience for keyboard users, people using assistive technology, people on mobile devices, and people under time pressure.
Why it matters
A page cannot support a business goal if a visitor cannot read it, navigate it, understand a form, or recover from an error. Accessible semantics and interaction patterns are therefore part of a dependable conversion journey.
A practical approach
Use one clear heading hierarchy, descriptive link text, visible focus styles, keyboard-operable controls, labelled form fields, useful error messages, and text alternatives for meaningful non-text content. Check contrast and test the key journeys without a mouse.
What to watch
Automated tools are valuable but incomplete. Combine them with manual keyboard checks and feedback from people who use assistive technology when possible.
